RICHMOND, Va. -- Police detectives have identified a man found dead near the city's East End Sunday morning.

Officers responded to the report of a shooting on the 2000 block of Fairfield Avenue shortly before 1 a.m. Upon arrival, they found the victim, 37-year-old Alton Neal, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of his death.

"It's very heartbreaking. It makes me really sad to question what's going with people that there's so much violence and we can't figure out how to interact with people in a better way. People have so much to give and it cuts short when they're not here anymore," said a neighbor Ellie Morris.

Family members told WTVR CBS 6 Neal had two kids.

Detectives are in the early stages of this investigation and are asking anyone in the community with information about this incident to either call Major Crimes Detective Mark Godwin at 804-646-5533 or Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
