YORK, Pa. — A Pennsylvania State Trooper shot and killed a driver who, investigators said, dragged the trooper on Interstate 83 during a traffic stop. The driver, identified as Rasheem Singletary, 25, of Petersburg, Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The trooper pulled Singletary over just before 1:19 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, police said.

“Singletary pulled away suddenly during the traffic stop, and the trooper became caught on the left side of the vehicle,” a Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson said. “Singletary then drug the trooper alongside the vehicle and subsequently attempted to crush the trooper’s body against the center median.”

Police said while the trooper tried to stop Singletary without lethal force, he eventually fired multiple shots at the driver.

“During the incident, Singletary reportedly struck the median while attempting to flee, then he hit a truck in traffic before coming to rest against the median. The driver of the truck was not seriously injured,” police said. EMS was summoned, but the Singletary died at the scene.”

The York, Pennsylvania-based trooper survived the ordeal.

“He’s a highly trained trooper and he did exactly what he needed to do,” Pennsylvania State Police Corporal Ryan Lawrence told WPMT. “He’s out here to protect the public and I’m absolutely glad and happy for he and his family as well as the state police family that we’re not investigating the death of a Pennsylvania state trooper.”
