ORLANDO — The bald eagle that garnered national attention after being rescued from a Florida storm drain last week has died.

This comes after the eagles condition took a turn for the worst on Monday, according to the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, who treated the bird after being rescued.

The eagle’s caregivers said complications from her injuries included, puncture wounds and fluid around its heart and lung. The eagle was also being treated for possible organ failure.

“Our team, along with Dr. Robert Hess and the staff at the Winter Park Veterinary Hospital made every attempt to save this beautiful bird,” said Katie Warner, Director of the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey. “We’re going to continue educating the community on why we must conserve Florida’s environment to help prevent future loss of our nation’s symbol of freedom. We’d like to thank the community for the outpouring of support.”

Bald eagle rescue

On Nov. 10, two birds, one on top of the other, were at the side of a road, video and photos from the scene initially showed.

The bird on top was trying to protect the other bird, which got stuck. An expert later told reporters the birds may have been fighting over territory.

About 6 p.m. local time, rescuers approached the birds, video from the scene showed. One of the birds flew away at that time, the station reported.

About 20 minutes later, the other bird was pulled from the drain.
