MECHANICSVILLE, Va. — An out-of-town restaurant group is taking a dip into the local dining scene.

Skrimp Shack, which operates five locations in Hampton Roads, is set to fill about 2,000 square feet in a Mechanicsville strip center at 6493 Mechanicsville Turnpike.

Kyle Rowley, a Mechanicsville resident who will be running and managing the new operation with his wife Samantha, confirmed the new 40-seat restaurant will occupy space that once housed Five Guys Burgers & Fries, which closed its outpost.

Skrimp Shack is set to make its Richmond regional debut in January 2017, Rowley said, with plans to add possible locations in Chesterfield and downtown Richmond near VCU.

“Those are areas we see ourselves expanding into,” Rowley said. “It all really depends on the type of real estate we find that’s going to best accommodate what we need.”

Founded by Mitch and Stacey Hartman in September 2011, Skrimp Shack has a handful of restaurants in Newport News, Yorktown, Hampton and Portsmouth.

In addition to shrimp and fish by the pound, Skrimp Shack serves catfish nugget and fried shrimp baskets, fish and chicken sandwiches and fish tacos for dine in or carry out.
