Monacan High basketball star Megan Walker picks UConn

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- The number one high school girls’ basketball player in the nation lives in Chesterfield County and just made one of the biggest decisions of her life.

Monacan High senior Megan Walker is ranked the no. 1 ranked girls’ basketball recruit in the nation, according to ESPN. She is arguably the highest rated recruit in any sport that the Richmond area has ever seen.

The 6’ 1’’ guard had her choice of where to play college basketball.

Walker recently narrowed her selections to the Connecticut Huskies, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and the Texas Longhorns.

Thursday, Thousands of college basketball fans awaited her big decision.

In front of friends, family and a large group of media, Walker choose to attend the University of Connecticut and play for coach Geno Auriemma, who has won 11 National Championships, including the last four in a row.

CBS 6 anchor Candace Burns caught up with Walker to see how she made her decision.

Walker said the recruiting process was really fun at first, but she did start to feel more pressure towards the end of the process.

She said multiple things led her to choosing UConn.

“The family atmosphere, when you just get that vibe of where you’re supposed to be,” she said. “I wanted to go to a program that was already established, that I could come right into and perform well at the highest level.”

Walker said she’s wanted to play for coach Auriemma since she was a freshman, but she needed to complete the process to make sure it was the right call.

When asked about how she became the best player in the country, Walker credited her work ethic and mentality on and off the basketball court.

“Its determination. When I discovered I was number one I was in shock, because I was like me number one? Out of the whole United States? It was kind of like I had to make it known that I was okay with being number one. I had to accept it,” she said.
