HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- A Mechanicsville man was charged with DUI and other traffic violations after he crashed his car into a  Mechanicsville utility pole, according to the Hanover Sheriff's Office.

Deputies initially pulled 52-year-old James Andrew Walters over at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday for a traffic violation at the intersection of Shady Grove Road and Mechanicsville Turnpike.

"During the course of the traffic stop, [Walters} refused to comply with the deputy, put his Chevrolet sedan in reverse, striking the deputy’s vehicle and pushing it back several feet. The driver of the vehicle then fled the scene. Another officer then began to pursue the suspect vehicle," Hanover Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt James Cooper said. "The suspect traveled westbound on Mechanicsville Turnpike before attempting to make a right turn onto Elm Drive. Due to the suspect’s speed and erratic driving, he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a utility pole at the intersection causing the pursuing deputy to collide into the suspect vehicle."

Deputies pulled Walters from the car, rendering aid into EMS could take him to the hospital. Cooper added.

Walters has been charged with Driving under the Influence, Driving after being declared an Habitual Offender, Eluding, Hit and Run, Obstruction of Justice, Failure to Obey a Stop Sign, and Assault on Law Enforcement.

Mechanicsville Turnpike reopened by 5 a.m.
