UPDATE: The water main break on Upper Appomattox near Battersea was repaired at approximately 9:30 Monday night. Water levels were restored overnight and the mandatory water restriction has been lifted. Water levels in the city did not reach critical levels, thus preserving the water quality and eliminating the need for a boil water advisory.

PETERSBURG, Va. -- A water main break on Halloween has led to mandatory citywide water restrictions in Petersburg.

City officials said a major water main break in the Battersesa area is causing a city-wide water shortage.

"Customers are asked to restrict water usage to those purposes that maintain the public health, safety and welfare of human and animal life. Utility customers shall prohibit using water for purposes such as watering lawns and/or landscapes, non-commercial car washing, filling swimming pools etc," Petersburg Interim City Manager Tom Tyrrell said.

Tyrrell said the mandatory restrictions will likely be in effect for the next 24 hours.

Crews are working to repair the break.
