CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A L.C. Bird High School student attempted to hurt himself in front of classmates, the school's principal informed parents Friday.

"Earlier today during school, a student in our school had a behavioral issue and attempted to hurt himself in front of his class," principal Laura Hebert wrote. "The situation, which was seen by one class only, was addressed immediately by staff. While federal laws prohibit me from sharing specific information, we did ask other students to leave the immediate area while we tended to the student. Our students followed directions wonderfully."

The call for service came in right around what would be first period at the school, according to police sources. The source also said that the freshman Earth Sciences student stabbed himself in the stomach area with a pair of scissors.

While the school could not release much information, Bird students shared their opinion about the situation on social media.

"Somebody stabbed themselves at L.C. Bird and nothing has been said by staff," one student wrote on Twitter. "And we are still going on like nothing ever happened."

"Nice job on handling a stabbing L.C Bird not even gonna announce it to the students to let us know what happened," another student wrote on Twitter.

"We have already worked directly with the parents in that classroom," Principal Hebert's message continued. "Any student who needed support services was allowed to visit with a counselor. Out of an abundance of precaution, a school counselor will visit your child’s classroom Monday to check on students. Please let us know if your child has concerns upon returning home today."
