HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — The Henrico County school board voted unanimously Thursday to rename Mills Godwin High School’s specialty center after a beloved teacher who was killed in a car crash earlier this year.

Todd Allen Phillips was killed in a West End car crash on June 17. Phillips was an AP Statistics teacher, basketball and tennis coach, and the director of the Center for Medical Sciences at the Henrico school.

The Center for Medical Sciences will now be called the Todd Allen Phillips Center for Medical Sciences in his honor.

In 2015, Phillip led the center’s transition to a focus on medical sciences from its initial emphasis on math, science and technology.

After his passing, several students came up with the idea to name the Center in honor of Phillips.

“This idea came from all of the people’s lives he touched to memorialize him in a meaningful way,” said Henrico County Schools Spokesperson Andy Jenks.  “I think in and beyond the Godwin community it’s a very important and meaningful day.”

Students affectionately nicknamed Phillips, T-Philly, and honored him during a celebration of his life earlier this year.

Phillips went above and beyond when it came to taking care of his students, Jenks added.

“A lot of us knew Todd very well and to see the passion to see he brought forward every single day was remarkable,” Jenks said. “And it showed when the community came out to celebrate his life as well.”
