RICHMOND, Va. -- Current gas prices in Virginia remain below the national average, but higher than they were one year ago. The current average in the Commonwealth is $2.09 a gallon versus $1.98 in Oct. 2015.
We looked back at our Video Vault for Throwback Thursday, to see how much gas cost local consumers in October 2001. Fifteen years ago, gas prices were beginning to drop from the national average of $1.43/gallon, as the United Stated began bombing Afghanistan.

Anchor Reba Hollingsworth found drivers flocking to the WaWa as prices began dropping. The cheapest gas prior to that was around $1.10/gallon in Southside and around $1.20/gallon in the West End.
Airlines were using less fuel, and travelers were taking fewer trips.
"You have strong supply, and a much weaker demand because people are wanting to stay closer to home now because of the war, and the bombings," said Randy Green, a Mid-Atlantic AAA representative CBS 6 interviewed in 2001.
Gas prices hit .99 cent
Gas prices dipped even lower in 2002 and began to rise in 2003 when the United States invaded Iraq. Gas reached its peak in 2008 and then again in 2011 when the state average was over $3.80, according to data from Gas Buddy.
When adjusted for inflation, gas in approximately .74 cents more expensive now.

Nationally, a gallon of milk, when adjusted for inflation, is .80 cents cheaper now than in 2001, according to the Consumer Price Index calculator provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
