ASHLAND, Va. -- Kathy Wood has spent days worrying about how she and her son would get their HVAC unit fixed. That's why a Friday morning surprise visit from CBS 6 News Reporter Shelby Brown and Photographer Chris Norton brought the Ashland woman to tears.

“I was scared," she said.  "Kept doing a lot of crying because I didn’t know how to fix it.”

Panic set in a few weeks ago when we had a cold snap and she tried to turn on the heat for her and her son Stephen, but it didn’t work. Kathy had no idea that Stephen secretly reached out to CBS 6 Problem Solvers. We shared their story with Midlothian Mechanical President Kevin Kirsh and a few days later, he and his colleague Trey Boze showed up to figure out what was wrong with the unit.

It didn’t take them long at all. The pair checked the outside unit and cleaned the coils with a special chemical. After that, Wood and her son said they could see an improvement inside of the home.

Kathy, who has health problems, called the two men, angels.

Boze said he’s glad to work for a company that tries to help out in the community whenever possible.

“There’s stuff I can’t do in life and I would hope if I was in this position someone would come and help me," Boze added. "We try to do that for them," Boze added.

Complete strangers were willing to help out a family in need, a random act of kindness that will warm Kathy’s heart long after winter has come and gone.

“I’m so grateful. It’s so wonderful," Wood said as she flashed a huge smile. "I can't believe someone would take the time to do this. I don't know what to say. It’s just wonderful."
