RICHMOND, Va. — There are two significant brewery celebrations this Saturday,  both within 1.5 miles of one another.

On Oct. 22, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery celebrates their fifth anniversary with a 9-hour event, and their featured tap list will include fellow brewers who also distribute through Brown Distributing — many who followed in Hardywood’s footprint.

While craft brewing existed in Richmond well before Hardywood — with Legend the only oldtimer still around — the industry’s recent rapid growth has been connected with Hardywood, thanks to their mobilization behind SB 604.

Former Gov. Bob McDonnell signed the bill in May 2012, after meeting at Hardywood Park with officials and industry representatives. Said bill allowed offered more financial incentive for breweries to open, without past constraints and to sell their product directly to a customer. There were four breweries open in Richmond at the time the bill passed. Now there are 26 in the metro area (and Petersburg).

Highlights of the day include the release of imperial milk stout Cassowary, the backbone for Trickery, Foolery and Ruse beers.

Also hit up Hardywood for a taste of Virginia, as they will feature Ardent Craft Ales, Bold Rock Hard Cider – IPA, Center of the Universe Brewing, Devils Backbone Brewing Company, Isley Brewing Company, Kindred Spirit Brewing, Legend Brewing Company, Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery, Midnight Brewery, Steam Bell Beer Works, STRANGEWAYS BREWING, The Answer Brewpub and Triple Crossing Brewing.

There will be menus from Smokie JOE’S BBQ, Hungry Turtle Food Truck, Slideways Mobile Bistro, Sammich and a special anniversary show with Black Masala, Super Yamba Band, Gull and Dave Watkins. Full details click to the event page.

And almost a third of them are located in Scott’s Addition, which was a completely different place back in 2013 before Isley Brewing Co. took a chance and opened, on Oct. 26.  Just within recent months, two cideries and two breweries opened — and another is slated for early 2017. The new zoning in the historic district allows for mixed use and the old industrial buildings complimented brewing equipment, with minimal buildouts and high ceilings.

Also on Oct. 22, Isley Brewing Company will celebrate their third anniversary with a 10-hour party.

Highlights include the Halloween-themed Blood Orange Porter and Green Slime Lime Plain Jane beers, plus a zombie walk. Additionally, there is the Scott’s Addition Pumpkin Festival all day along Boulevard. Food trucks at the event are The Return Of The Mac and BoDillaz, plus many others just blocks away at the festival. Chris Buerkley plays from  2 to 4 p.m.
