RICHMOND, Va. -- Officials released the name of the 24-year-old man shot to death near an elementary school on Richmond's Southside Wednesday night.
Officers were dispatched to the 5100 block of Forest Hill Avenue at 8:11 p.m. for a report of random gunfire, but did not find the victim.
Police received a call minutes later about a person down near the intersection of Hioaks and Jahnke roads.
Officers located Tevon F. Dickerson, of the 200 block of Plazaview Road, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, in the roadway.
Dickerson was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Detectives believe the two scenes are related and that the victim was driven to the second location near Chippenham Hospital in an attempt to seek medical attention," Susan Rowland, a spokesperson for Richmond Police, said. "They are canvassing the area in order to gather additional information and actively pursuing all available leads in the case."
The driver of the vehicle did stop to help the victim and was being questioned by investigators.
Sources said police are looking for a red sedan that was involved in the shooting that last seen turning north on Prince Arthur Rd.
This shooting is the city's 51st homicide for 2016.
Neighbors: People finding bullets behind their houses
Parents walking their children to Westover Hills Elementary Thursday morning said they were concerned for their safety after a man was shot nearby just hours before.
“The crime is getting too close for comfort,” said Dorothy Washington while at the bus stop with her 5-year-old grandson.
Sources said someone was driving the shooting victim to the hospital when he fell out of an unlocked door in the backseat of the car and onto the pavement.
A youth football team was practicing in the elementary school’s field, while parents were walking with their children when at least five gunshots were heard, according to neighbors.
“My brother-in-law was out with his 9-year-old son when they heard the shots,” said Carrie Rogers, parent of three young children.
Police taped up the alleyway at Forest Hill Avenue and Prince Arthur Road and were seen interviewing witnesses.
“People were finding bullets in the alley behind their houses,” said Rogers.
