CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. -- Four people from Brooklyn, New York, including two men and two women, have been arrested and charged in connection with a skimming scam among other charges.

An alert clerk at the Love's Truck Stop in Caroline County helped stop what deputies say could've been some serious credit card fraud and cigarette trafficking.

Deputies say evidence was found inside the suspects’ car.

"We found approximately 75 credit cards, a card skimming device, an Apple iPad, and a credit card embossing machine that actually puts the names and numbers on front of the card," said Caroline County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Travis Nutter.

A deputy responded to the truck stop and found out the driver of the suspect’s car didn’t appreciate being detained.

"He quickly ran out of the store,” said Nutter. “The deputy stepped in front (of the vehicle) and told the driver to stop and instead the driver sped up causing the deputy to jump out of the way."

On the run, the driver earned himself a charge of attempted capital murder of a police officer as troopers jumped in on the pursuit.

Deputies say the high-speed chase ended at a rest stop under construction near Ladysmith. The Mercedes the suspects were riding in came to a screeching halt and they jumped out and ran into the woods.

Construction workers and rest stop employees helped deputies with directions and descriptions. Three suspects were arrested after the chase and with the fourth already in custody back at the Carmel Church truck stop.

“It’s kind of messed up,” said Vernon Ward Jr., who was working at the Ladysmith rest stop under construction. “People just make a little bit of money and they out here stealing credit card info."

Deputies say all four suspects are at Pamunkey Regional Jail with no bond. They're investigating whether the four suspects are the same skimmers that hit a truck stop in North Carolina Tuesday.
