POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. -- No one was hurt when Sunday's strong wind ripped the roof off a strip shopping center in Powhatan County, according to Huguenot Volunteer Fire Department Chief Taylor Goodman.

Firefighters were called to the strip mall, along the 2600 block of Anderson Highway (also known as Route 60), at about 5 p.m.

"Firefighters were returning from a training evolution, and arrived in minutes to find a large section of the roof of a strip shopping center in the parking lot," Goodman said. "It appeared that high winds pulled the roof from the building, causing it to crash into the parking lot. This appeared to be a secondary roof added to the original building at some point."

The roof landed on top of an empty car, Goodman added.

The businesses located at the shopping center are closed until further notice.

"All of the businesses in the shopping center were closed, so there were no injuries," he said. "The fire marshal and building inspector responded to the scene to investigate."
