CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. --  More than 150 customers remained without power in the Lake Crystal Farms neighborhood off Courthouse Road in Chesterfield Monday afternoon.

Chesterfield saw some of the most power outages in region after weekend storms.

Terri Finnigan was one of those customers who lost power.

She and her family got back to a dark home Sunday night after a trip to West Virginia.

"We have hurricane lamps and we filled those with oil and we used those to put things away. We talked about a generator but we didn't get that. But I have a camping stove so I used that this morning for coffee and got chocolate and oatmeal,” said Finnigan.

It’s all because heavy rain and strong wind knocked down a tree off Bluefield Road, bringing down power lines and breaking two utility poles.

"That's a lot worse than I thought it was. That's a big tree,” said Finnigan.

It’s a similar scene all around Chesterfield: Downed trees blocking roads, knocking out power.

Seven schools in the county lost power as a result, forcing officials to cancel school Monday.

Cosby High School, L.C. Bird High School, Carver Middle, Salem Church Middle, Gates Elementary, Salem Church  Elementary, and the Career and Technical Center on Courthouse Road were all closed.

But those without power, who didn’t have any damage to their homes, said it could’ve been worse.

"But other places were hit a whole lot harder than we were,” said Finnigan.

A spokesperson for Dominion Virginia Power said she hopes crews would restore electricity to the majority of customers by Monday night.

Schools, they said, were the top priority.
