RICHMOND, VA – Mayoral candidate Levar Stoney picked up another political endorsement.

Anne Holton, former Virginia Secretary of Education, endorsed Levar Stoney for Mayor.

Anne released the following statement:

“I have been a passionate fan of Richmond for my entire life and I have a strong sense of what it takes to be an effective Mayor of this great city. I have been closely watching the race to choose our next leader. It is clear that Levar Stoney is the candidate most prepared to lead our city, and its children, into a prosperous future. I worked along side Levar as part of an administration that has invested significant resources in public education and made improving the quality of life of our children a top priority. Levar was a fantastic colleague, and crucial member of our cabinet, who excelled at running the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office. Beyond that, Levar is a great friend and it was an honor to work with him. As a Richmonder, I know that Levar has the experience, vision, and passion necessary to improve Richmond Public Schools and take our city to the next level.”

Levar has also won the endorsements of The Richmond City Democratic Committee, The Richmond Education Association, Former City Council President Bill Pantele, Delegate Jennifer L. McClellan (D-Richmond), The Home Building Association of Richmond, 32BJ SEIU, UFCW Local 400, and Terry McAuliffe.

Stoney’s opponent Jack Berry received an endorsement recently from Robert Bobb, long time Richmond City Manager.

“Bobb holds the distinction of having served on a continuous basis as the longest tenured African-American City Manager/City Administrator in the Nation,” Berry said. “He is an expert on the issues facing urban government in the realms of education, economic development, community and neighborhood development, municipal budgeting and finances, contract negotiations, public/private partnerships of sports franchises, libraries and recreation facilities, and public safety.”

Berry was earlier endorsed by the Richmond Association of Realtors’ political action committee. He has also been endorsed by former Richmond City Council member and state delegate Viola Baskerville, and Thomasina Binga, a Richmond Public Schools educator.

Candidate Joe Morrissey, who leads the race, according to a mayoral poll, has been endorsed by the Richmond Crusade of Voters.

“Richmond, from the turn of the century to the mid-’50s, was called the Black Wall Street of the South. We had economic infrastructure. We had businesses galore,” Jewell said to Richmond Magazine. “Our business base is flat like a pancake. Joe Morrissey is the only one who can address that, or even gives a damn to try. The rest of them don’t give a damn to try.”
