ASHLAND, Va. – Indiana Governor Mike Pence campaigned in Ashland Monday night, before hundreds of enthusiastic supporters at Cox Transportation Services.

Pence’s visit comes on the eve of Tuesday’s first vice presidential debate at Longwood University in Farmville, with Virginia Senator Tim Kaine.

“When he was governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, he left the state $2 billion in the hole,” Pence said Monday night. “I’m proud to say we have the largest surplus in Indiana history, more than $2 billion in the bank.”

The focus of Monday night’s speech was on everything from the economy and foreign policy, to heath care and veteran’s affairs, issues several Trump supporters say brought them to Monday’s rally.

“We had a healthcare plan that we liked, that was very affordable, before all the changes and before Obamacare,” said one supporter.

“It’s to keep her out,” said another Trump/Pence supporter, about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. “It’s not unfortunately about the Donald’s qualifications. She’s just too dangerous.

Pence’s visit to the commonwealth also comes on the heels of recent controversy surrounding Trump’s tax returns and an investigation into the Trump foundation.

Allegations, Pence claims are fueled by the media.

“The media is so busy parsing every word that Donald Trump said in the last 30 minutes, they been ignoring what the Clinton’s been up to for the last 30 years,” he said to a roar of applause.

Pence spoke for about half and shook hands with some supporters, before getting in his motorcade and heading to Farmville for Tuesday night’s debate.

Pence will also stay in Virginia for a Wednesday visit to the Rockingham County Fair Association at 11:30 a.m.

You can watch the debate starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday on CBS 6.
