STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Schools throughout Virginia have increased security amid threatening clown posts on social media, even though most officials find the threats “not credible.”

Locally, clown spottings in Henrico and Chesterfield County have residents on edge. Two Henrico teens were arrested for wearing clown masks and chasing children. In Chesterfield, a bus driver tried to soothe student fears by creating an “Anti-clown” spray, after clown spottings and social media posts shook residents.

Both the Hampton Police Department (HPD) and Newport News Police Department (NNPD) tightened security at specific schools on Friday, because of threats on social media. And in Ohio, an entire school district shut down after acreepy clown attack.

In Stafford County,  law enforcement determined that menacing clown threats were not credible. However, out of an abundance of caution, the school system said they have increased security.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you might have seen on television and social media, there is a growing concern surrounding clowns and threats to schools. Stafford County Public Schools and Stafford County Sheriff’s Office are aware of the threats involving clowns on social media.  These social media postings concerning our school division are not credible. While there have been reports, law enforcement determined there have been no legitimate sightings of clowns.  However, in an abundance of caution, law enforcement has enhanced security procedures throughout the school division and patrols are on high alert.  Please be assured that safety and security is a top priority for SCPS.
