DOSWELL, Va. — A week’s worth of rain has wrecked havoc on the parking situation at The State Fair of Virginia. When some fairgoers arrived at Meadow Event Park on Saturday, the parking lots were closed.

“No one in the special event business ever wants to close parking lots, however, in the interest of public safety we had to make that decision yesterday afternoon,” explained SFVA executive director Marlene Pierson-Jolliffe. “Our goal is give our fairgoers an enjoyable experience. We certainly appreciate their support and understanding.”

In an effort to improve Sunday’s experience, fair organizers made the following changes:

Due to persistent rains over much of the past two weeks, The State Fair of Virginia is experiencing muddy conditions in many of its parking lots at The Meadow Event Park.

About 60 percent of the lots are open and usable.

To help fairgoers, the fair will have available bus shuttle service from paved parking lots across from Kings Dominion mid-Sunday afternoon as MEP lots fill.

A combination of peak crowds Saturday afternoon, wet parking areas and accidents on Interstate 95 created backups. Fairgoers are urged to car pool, if possible.

Sunday Fair hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. but rides will remain open after the gates close.
