HOPEWELL, Va. – Police have arrested a Hopewell man after police say the suspect robbed someone at a bank then led investigators on two police chases.

Police said at approximately 1:35 p.m. officers responded to the Hopewell Chemical Federal Credit Union located at 702 Elm St. for a reported robbery of an individual.

When investigators arrived on the scene, they located the suspect’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

Police said the suspect, Demetris Leshawn Russell, 22, did not comply with ordered to stop, so a police chase ensued.

Investigators said the short pursuit ended when Russell crashed into a parked and occupied vehicle at the intersection of S.8th Ave. and Atlantic St. and then fled on foot.

“As officers established a perimeter to contain the offender, he was observed entering another vehicle and fleeing the area,” said a police spokesperson. “A second short vehicle pursuit ensued which ended when the vehicle crashed into an embankment along the railroad tracks near the intersection of Laprade Ave. and S. Main St.”

Russell was subsequently taken into police custody without further incident.

The driver of the parked vehicle involved in the hit and run sustained a minor injury and was treated and released at the scene.

Warrants were obtained against Russell for robbery, grand larceny, felony hit and run, felony eluding and driving on a suspended operator’s license.

He was transported to the Riverside Regional Jail where he is currently being held without bond prior to his arraignment.
