RICHMOND, Va. — Fall isn’t just for Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers, it is also a time to revel in ciders.
A unique Nitro Coffee Cider collaboration between Buskey Cider, Blanchard’s Coffee Roasting Co., and Confluence Coffee Co. will be tapped on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Buskey Cider in Scott’s Addition.
Around 15 pounds of Yara coffee was used for the concoction, along with a blend of Pink Lady and Stayman apples. The apple varieties used for the collaboration were sourced from Silver Creek Orchard in Nelson County.
“These apples were selected to bring a bright acidity to the beverage while complimenting the caramel notes of the coffee,” said Alec Steinmetz, cider maker.
Buskey Cider Nitro Coffee Cider
Blanchards, an organic craft coffee roaster that opened locally in 2005, roasted the beans, and Confluence, a hot, new startup, helped with the cold brew techniques.
“We also compared our nitrogen carbonation techniques to optimize this batch,” a Buskey representative said.
The nitrogen will present a creamy, smooth mouthfeel to the coffee cider. Buskey was one of the first cideries to offer a Nitro Cider locally.
The Nitro Coffee Cider, at 6.9% ABV, will be on tap in the taproom at 2910 West Leigh Street, starting Saturday, Oct. 1. Just over four barrels, or around 124 gallons were made.
Buskey Cider opened in April 2016 in Scott’s Addition, where they produce and sell their hard cider in addition to distribution.
The cidery announced in July that they would double production and begin canning several flagship varieties, like RVA Cider, 45 and Trying, and the Citra Hop Cider. Next year the cidery plans to release several new batches of cider in cans and kegs.
