CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Police found the person who was experiencing a mental health issue near St. Francis Hospital Friday afternoon.

That search prompted nearby Tomahawk Creek Middle School to alter afternoon plans in the name of student safety.

“We made the decision today to briefly keep students inside the building and in the trailers after police notified us they were working to locate an individual in the community,” Tomahawk Creek Middle School Dr. David Ellena wrote in a letter to parents. “The building was secured and our trailers were actively monitored while our normal instructional day continued. These steps were taken as a precaution, and at no time were any students or staff in danger.”

Dr. Ellena said the school was never locked down, nor was the instructional day disrupted.

“As the Principal, I did make the decision to cancel all afternoon activities as a precaution,” he continued. “We will resume with normal after school activities on Monday afternoon.”
