PETERSBURG, Va. – Two adults and three children have been displaced after a house fire in Petersburg Monday afternoon.

Firefighters said when they arrived to the home near the intersection of N. Jones and High Streets, they ran into some problems with a fire hydrant they attempted to use for their water source.

They said the cap on the hydrant would not come off so they had to go across the street and over a block to use another hydrant.

Once firefighters located a working hydrant they were able to extinguish the house fire. No was injured.

Fire officials said in the past the department would go around and check each hydrant to make sure they lubricated and working properly.

They said a few years ago the water department took over that responsibility and instead of checking each hydrant, the department now flushes the system once a year.

The Red Cross has been called the assist the displaced family of five.
