RICHMOND, Va. – School cafeteria workers are one of many unsung heroes throughout the school year.

So CBS 6 wanted to surprise four devoted cafeteria workers at a Richmond elementary school as a reward for their hard work.

CBS 6 reporter Shelby Brown, with the help of Union Bank and Trust, surprised Mary Pleasant, Cynthia Atkins, Natalia Green, and manager Gloria Kenney in a back-to-school edition of CBS 6 Gives.

“We heard about all the good work you all do for the kids and how you cook them up the good food, and giving them love all the time… So we wanted to give y’all some love back in return,” Shelby told the women. “Grab yourselves a box and check out your meal.”

What was disguised as food in a meal box was actually a special gift for the women.

When the women opened the box they were shocked to find a gift card for each of them.

“I’m about to cry,” said a shocked and happy Natalia Green.

“Thank you so much,” the women said to Shelby, while thanking her with a group hug.

“All we ask is that you continue to do good and give back to the kids and give back to the community and just know that you all are truly appreciated,” said Shelby.
