RICHMOND, Va. — The Kappa Alpha fraternity at the University of Richmond was suspended Monday after fraternity members sent a “grossly offensive” email to about 100 UR students, university officials said.
The email, according to the UR student newspaper The Collegian, was sent Friday afternoon and invited students to the Kappa Alpha house for a party.
“If you haven’t started drinking already, catch up,” the email obtained by The Collegian concluded. “Tonight’s the type of night that makes fathers afraid to send their daughters away to school. Let’s get it.”
On Monday, the university addressed the Kappa Alpha email and suspension.
“The e-mail contained grossly offensive language and suggestions of behavior inconsistent with our policies concerning Greek life and with the caring nature of our campus community,” a University of Richmond spokesperson said. “As a result, the University has suspended all chapter operations, activities, and events pending a thorough investigation.”
University administration said it would meet with Greek leadership to “discuss the suspension and to reiterate our expectations for Greek Life.”
Friday’s email was sent the same day a group of UR students packed a private meeting to discuss how the university has handled sexual assault cases in the wake of student Cecilia Carreras’ Huffington Post article – which was widely shared on social media.
