PETERSBURG, Va. --The City of Petersburg has been writing checks towards public safety, amid public concern that a deficit would cripple certain departments.
Monday morning, Southside Virginia Emergency Crew deposited a check from the city for around $46,000 which will allows them to keep their doors up and to continue to provide Advanced Life Support to residents in need. "It's the last installment, from last years budget" says Bubby Bish, Director of Operations with Southside Virginia Emergency Crew.

"We feel that we're in good shape until the first of the year and we feel the City is continuing to work with us, so we can have a bright future here in the City of Petersburg," Bish added.
The vendor which sold 18 sets of new turnout gear to Petersburg Fire Department also had a check handed to their salesman Monday morning, covering a $34,000 invoice.
The company warned the city that without payment, the turnout gear that had been bought for the City's newest firefighters would be repossessed.
The company confirmed to CBS 6 the payment was made.
Petersburg firefighters also received a loan of 18 air packs.
The company that was forced to repossess 54 brand new air packs due to non-payment of more than $300,000, loaned the city 18 packs which had taken in on a trade with the Virginia Beach Fire Department.
The packs were tested and are compatible with what Petersburg uses in the field.
"Well I'm very happy to hear it, because you never know when you're going to need these things, and it's good to know it's there, when you need it, so I'm happy it's paid," said Carolyn Stith, concerned citizen.
The city said that cutting over $12 million from the budget is freeing up some funds.
