RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Police surrounded an apartment complex and negotiated with a man for hours Friday morning after his wife said he threatened to harm himself and his family.

Richmond Police Deputy Chief Steve Drew said officers responded to a 911 call from the man’s wife at the Town and Country Apartments, off Whitehead Road in South Richmond, at about 2 a.m.

“The female part of the domestic had come outside and was upset,” Drew said. “Officers went up and knocked on the door and there were some threats made.”

He said detectives believed the man was armed and possibly suicidal, which prompted them to block off a large portion of the apartment complex.

Police also evacuated several of the neighboring apartments as a precaution.

After making contact with the man by phone, he surrendered to police peacefully just after 5 a.m. Friday.

Police suspect alcohol was involved. No injuries were reported.
