HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — The trial for the Henrico County police officer accused of shooting a woman multiple times during a traffic stop is now set to begin on October 24.

Joel Greenway has been charged with malicious wounding and shooting into an occupied vehicle and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Prosecutors say during the Dec. 15 traffic stop on Nine Mile Road, Greenway fired multiple shots into a car during a traffic stop, when the driver he pulled over took off.

Kimberly McNeil, a passenger in the car, was struck four times, including wounds to her neck and hands. She survived the shooting.

Evidence shows Greenway fired seven shots, according to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.

Among the seven shots, bullets struck the front windshield twice, rear passenger window twice, through the passenger headrest, among other areas.

McNeil was a passenger in her boyfriend’s parked car, when Greenway came up on the passenger side and asked them to roll down the window, according to sources familiar with the case. Those sources said the driver started to pull away – and that is when Greenway started shooting into the vehicle from the passenger side.

Thursday a motions hearing was held in Henrico Circuit Court ahead of Greenway’s five-day trial.

A motion to keep out certain testimony regarding a trajectory analysis of the bullets was denied. In addition, a motion to keep out certain evidence regarding Greenway’s police training was also denied.

Greenway, who is still a Henrico employee, is not actively doing police work.
