HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- School bus drivers are one of many unsung heroes throughout the school year. So CBS 6 wanted to surprise a Henrico bus driver who is known for always going above and beyond for her students.

CBS 6 reporter Melissa Hipolit, with the help of Union Bank and Trust, surprised Henrico County bus driver, Melissa Perry, in a back-to-school edition of CBS 6 Gives.

“I’m told that you are a fantastic bus driver and that you are extremely hard working and you are always stepping in to help out,” Hipolit said to Perry. “We wanted to thank you for all your hard work and give you a gift card for $200.”

“Oh my God. Thank y’all,” replied Perry with a hug. “You’re gonna make me cry and I don’t cry.”

“Are you surprised,” asked Hipolit.

“Yes. I’m a single parent with two kids, so this will really come in handy because they always want something,” said Perry.

Perry said she is going to use the money on school clothes for her children.

The bus driver of six years said she is honored that her supervisors raved about her performance as a driver and contributions to the county.

“That’s really awesome… I better not call out sick this year,” she said with a laugh.
