MONTPELIER, Va. -- It has been three months since a car struck Denise Gorondy while she was out for a Sunday morning run. A cyclist found the badly injured mother of two along the side of Dunns Chapel Road that June 5 day.

"After 40 days in the hospital and an awe-inspiring fight for her life, Denise finally went home with her family in July," her sister Jennifer Shepard said. "Even though she has come a very long way since the day of the accident, she still has a long road of recovery ahead."

Gorondy, a doctor at Three Oaks Equine Veterinary Services in Goochland, remains unable to walk or even stand up, Shepard added.

"Denise is strong and a fighter. Her future looks bright but will require extended recovery," she said.

Family and friends have organized a fundraiser to help Gorondy and her family while she recovers.

Denise Gorondy benefit

The September 17 benefit will be held at The Wine Loft in West Broad Village.

"Denise is an avid runner, local equine vet and business owner, dedicated mom and wife. Her husband is a detective with the City of Richmond Police Department and a member of the Richmond SWAT team. Denise and Ben have called the Richmond area home for 16 years and have contributed much to the local community," her sister said.

Tsz Kit Zane Theodore Yung, 23, of Rockville, was arrested in connection with Gorondy's hit and run.

Yung told investigators he believed he had hit a deer, according to search documents.

He bonded out of jail shortly after his arrest. He is due back in court later this month.
