NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. — A 17-year-old boy was killed when the pickup he was driving ran off the road and struck a tree in Nottoway County Sunday afternoon.

Sgt. Steve Vick with Virginia State Police said the single-vehicle crash happened at 1:55 p.m. on Route 607 southbound about 9/10 mile north of Route 633.

“A 1989 Ford F-250 was traveling south on Route 607 when it ran off the road to the right, struck a tree and caught fire,” Vick said.

The driver of the truck, David L. Harris Jr. of Nottoway County,  died at the scene.

Authorities are not sure if Harris was wearing a seat belt.

Vick said speed is being considered a factor in the crash.
