DELTAVILLE, Va. -- Residents and vacationers are feeling the effects of Hermine with strong winds and heavy waves crashing along the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck shoreline, but that was not enough of a serious threat to keep folks away from the picturesque spot.
Jason Stech is all too familiar with riding out a storm since his Deltaville home sits right along the shoreline. As a result, he decided to stay put for the Labor Day weekend.
"I've been here for 30 years, so I got an idea of when it's time to leave and when we can be ok," Stech said."It's the first week of college football, and this is my vacation, so I got four days off."

Frank Sherman, a frequent visitor to Deltaville, said he felt a bit safer on his bike Saturday versus being on a boat during high tide.
"I come up on the weekends and hang out on the boat and sail," Sherman explained.
"When you're sleeping on the boat and every once in a while, she'll do a good little rock for you. It kind of reminds you, yeah, mother nature is in charge. And you're just along for the ride," Sherman said.

Fifteen miles away in Whitestone, the waves were choppy and high water covered some roadways.
With tropical storm warnings in effect in the Northern Neck through Saturday night, state and local emergency officials are ready to respond to any power outages, flooding or damage.
