Man dies after housing unit catches fire in Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Va. — A man is dead after a vacant housing unit fire in Petersburg Friday night.

Fire officials said they responded to a call around 10:34 p.m. for a fire in the 600 block of High Street.

When units arrived, they found a man dead inside a bedroom. He was the only person inside the housing unit.

Fire officials said everyone that lived in the complex moved out and they don’t know if victim was in the process of moving out or if he was squatting.

The housing unit houses four apartments inside.

Investigators believe the fire was accidental. Fire Marshals are still looking at a couple of scenarios, but have ruled out foul play.

The identity of the victim has not been released at this time.
