LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. — A Virginia community is coming together after a 5-month-old boy was killed when he and his mother were struck by an SUV while at a crosswalk in Loudoun County.

The accident happened on the morning on August 29 when Mindy Schulz was pushing her son Tristan in a stroller in the Lansdowne area of Leesburg, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Tristan Schulz was taken to an area hospital where he died. His mother remains in stable condition after suffering serious injuries in the accident.

In the days following Tristian’s death, dozens of community members have dropped off flowers and stuffed animals to show their condolences during the family’s difficult time.

In fact, a GoFundMe page to help the family with funeral expenses has raised $75,000 since being created on September 1.

Lindsey Reckert Saylor, who set up the family’s GoFundMe page, says the family is completely shocked, heartbroken, and have a long road ahead of them.

“Please, if you can, donate anything you can to help them with medical expenses as well as funeral costs. No parent should EVER have to bury their child! Please keep Mindy, Rod, and Hayden in your prayers,” she wrote.

Over 1,700 people from across Virginia and the country have contributed donations to the fund.

Tristian’s grandfather, Rodney Schulz Sr., thanked the community for their outpouring of support.

“The outpouring of genuine sympathy for my son and his wife is beyond any expression of appreciation,” he wrote on the page. “The loss of our youngest grandchild is a tragedy. God bless all for your expressions of support.”

The name of the driver involved in the accident has not been released at this time. According to ABC7, the driver is a 45-year-old man and he has hired an attorney.

Police say that drug and alcohol have been ruled out as factors in the crash, but distracted driving is being investigated.
