CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- One Chesterfield teacher celebrating a major milestone got a big surprise Wednesday morning.

Susan Coleman, a social studies teacher at Robius Middle School, has been shaping the lives of students for half a century, so staff members planned a surprise to celebrate her 50th year in the classroom.

“She mentors every new teacher that comes in the building,” one teacher said. “She gives them all of her materials… She does a lot of creative things for the kids.”

In fact, the teacher said Coleman makes history come alive for her students. For example, she dresses up like a flapper and even added a speakeasy to her classroom.

Coleman said she has no desire to retire and joked she will stay until Chesterfield schools decides to get rid of her.
