CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. – A Chesterfield woman has been arrested after being accused of two cases of child abuse including smothering her infant with a pillow.
Police say they received a tip from Child Protective Services regarding a 10-month-old boy who recently sustained injuries.
During the investigation, detectives determined the child’s mother, Brianna Tyrrell, put a pillow over the child’s face, which caused the child to stop breathing.
The child’s injuries were not considered life threatening and he has since been released from the hospital.
Investigators said the baby’s injuries were initially reported by a local hospital to CPS.
Police said during their investigation of the incident, investigators learned of an earlier incident, which had not been reported, in which Tyrrell allegedly squeezed the child and he stopped breathing.
Tyrrell, 21, has been charged with two counts of felony child abuse and neglect in relation to both cases.
According to Chesterfield court records, Tyrrell’s crime history includes misdemeanor assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, and petit larceny from 2014.
