NEW YORK — Hillary Clinton’s VP pick and Virginia Senator Tim Kaine appeared on a late-night talk show for the first time Thursday night on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on CBS 6.

Colbert asked Kaine about how he felt when Clinton called him to offer him the VP spot.

“Hillary Clinton called me about 7:32, Friday, July 22. Not that it was a memorable moment,” Kaine smiled. “The last thing I said to her was…, ‘How much time do I have before the press knows, because I want to go tell my wife in person. She said, ‘I think you got 15 minutes.'”

Kaine said he and his wife were overcome with the news.

The VP pick talked about his background, including his time as Jesuit missionary and a civil rights lawyer.

Colbert asked for Kaine’s favorite passage from the New Testament.

“I would say, Philippians. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit but with humility of mind consider one another as more important than yourself.”

Colbert also showed the candidate a sampling of tweets where he was the butt of dad jokes.

“I have three children who have been ripping on me saying those things about me since they were born,” Kaine said.

Kaine also participated in a few sketches and of course, broke out his harmonica to jam with Jon Batiste and Stay Human.
