Person of interest named in King and Queen County homicide

KING AND QUEEN COUNTY, Va. – A man has been identified as a person of interest in connection with the murder of James Edward Byrd “Scooter” on the morning of August 16.

The King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the whereabouts of Alphonso Johnson who is wanted on charges in Essex County for brandishing a firearm, failure to appear in court, and a probation violation.

Johnson is not considered a suspect at this time, but he is wanted for questioning.

Law enforcement officials say he should be considered to be armed and dangerous. He is believed to be in Essex County or Middlesex County.

“On August 16, 2016 at approximately 2:15am, a suspect(s) entered the home of the victim and shot and killed Mr. Byrd,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident.

The only description at this time is that one of the suspects had on a black hoodie.
