RIO DE JANEIRO – Hope Solo never claimed to be a graceful loser.

The University of Washington graduate went on a tirade after the U.S. was ousted from the Olympics by Sweden, 4-3, calling the Swedes “a bunch of cowards.”

“I’m very proud of this team, but I think we played a bunch of cowards,” Solo said. “The best team did not win today.”

Solo’s no stranger to controversy, with a long history of colorful remarks and domestic-violence charges on her record.

Last month, she became the first goalkeeper – male or female – with 100 shutouts in international competition.

Solo said she was upset because the Swedes “didn’t want to open play.”

“I don’t think they’re going to make it that far in the tournament,” she said. “I think it was very cowardly. But they won. They’re moving on, and we’re going home.
