The 11th annual Filipino Festival is a community event with over 600 volunteers showcasing the richness of the Filipino culture and promotes a respect for and appreciation of the Filipino heritage. The two-day features traditional cuisine, folk dances and music and takes place on the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 8200 Woodman Road in Glen Allen. This year’s Filipino Festival celebrates Mindanao, the “Land of Promise”, with focus on indigenous groups T’boli and Maranao. Friday’s hours are 5-10pm and 10am -10pm Saturday. Proceeds of the Filipino Festival support various ministries and project of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Our Lady of Lourdes School, a Blue Ribbon school. This year, the following organizations have been added to the benefactors list: Alzheimer’s Association (Richmond Chapter), and Gallagher speaks up teen depression research and other charities that include the National Alliance on Mental Illness – Richmond chapter. For more details visit www.filipinofestival.org. The 3rd annual Race ‘N Roll 5K race to benefit the Colorado Fund for Muscular Dystrophy is Saturday. This will be a chip timed race provided by Commonwealth Timing and will kick off with a 1 Mile Kids Fun Run  before the start of the 5K. Each Fun Run participant will receive a participation medal. Schedule of events for the Mystic Arts of Tibet Tour: Friday10 a.m. to 6 p.m., making the sand mandala. Public meditation and chanting at 6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., making the sand mandala. Public meditation and chanting at 6 p.m. At 2 p.m. there will be a public lecture on “Symbolism of the Mandala.” Sunday 10 a.m.to noon, finishing the mandala. Closing ceremony begins at 1 p.m. There will be chanting and dissolution of the entire mandala. Small packets of the sand will be handed out to the audience (it is not guaranteed all attendees will get sand, but they we will do their best). Then the remaining sand will be deposited into the James River at the Canal Walk about 20-30 minutes after the museum closes. All the positive blessings of the event are sent out to the world in this ceremony. The Holocaust museum is located at 2000 East Cary Street. Jammin’ on the James Concert Series, a free concert on the grounds of Wilton House Museum, 215 South Wilton Road Saturday form 6pm – 8pm. Spend an evening listening to music with your lawn chairs and picnic dinner overlooking the James River. The Richmond Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 11 – 14 at various locations around the Richmond area. Performers include Herbie Hancock, The Roots, Al Jarreau, and Esperanza Spalding, Vanessa Williams, Ramsey Lewis, Diane Schuur, Arrested Development, Morris Day and The Time, and many others.  Admission is free to Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and the Jazz Café at VMFA on Thursday, August 11th.  Tickets are $30 for “Homegrown at the Hipp” at the Hippodrome Theater Friday, August 12th. 33rd Annual Carytown Watermelon Festival, Sunday 10am – 4pm in Carytown. The streets from Thompson to the Boulevard will be closed to foot traffic and Restaurants and shops in Carytown will be open. Fifty bands, jugglers, and folk acts will entertain from 5 outdoor stages sponsored by Capital One. The Shriners are back and will be slicing through more than three thousand watermelons feeding thousands. Every year the Shriners sell watermelon donated by Martin's, with proceeds benefiting the Shriners Hospital for children.
