HENRICO COUNTY, Va. – A Henrico woman battling ALS is being honored with a 5K walk after years of dedication to the Youth in the East End.

Sandy Waller has spent nearly 20 years volunteering with Glen Lea football, East End youth basketball and the East End Tigers.

Now battling ALS, families touched by Waller’s work have organized the Sandy Waller ALS 5K walk in her honor.

“She’s always worked hard with trying to uplift the kids,” said 5-K organizer Makon Fletcher. “I’ve seen how many people she has touched. So, a part of me wants to let the community know about how much she's done.”

Fletcher said they just wanted to offer their support to Waller, who has been battling ALS for the past year.

“We want to try and help her out, because she’s fighting now,” she added.

Organizers said the money raised will help Waller with her medical bills with a portion going to ALS research.

The Sandy Waller ALS 5K is Saturday August 6 at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, located at 1440 N Laburnum Avenue.
