HENRICO COUNTY, Va. ---Police are on the hunt for a burglar accused of assaulting and opening fire on homeowners in the county's West End.

Officers responded to an emergency call in the 4900 block of Riverplace Court around 3 a.m. Saturday. They say a woman who lived there left her home to pick up her daughter around 2 a.m. and returned to find her front garage door and back door open.

As she began calling out to her other daughter, a man wearing a dark mask with dark clothing and holding a handgun appeared from one of the bedrooms.

Police say he assaulted the homeowners who then handed over money and fired a shot as they tried to run out of the house.

The family was able to make it out of the house safely.

Police say the suspect escaped in an unknown direction. Police dogs were brought out to the scene, but were unable to track him.

Investigators tell CBS 6 News two people returned home and found a man standing inside their house wearing all black with his face covered.

Henrico police say they don't have any suspects and anyone with information is asked to call (804) 501-5000.
