Man dies after jumping into Richmond canal

RICHMOND, Va. — A man died after he jumped into the canal along Dock Street in Richmond Wednesday evening.

Richmond Police responded to Dock Street at about 7:15 p.m. after people reported a man in mental distress.

“An officer arrived and found the subject matching the description of a man who had been yelling at passersby along the Canal Walk,” a Richmond Police spokesman said. “When the officer approached the man, the man jumped into the canal and disappeared in the water.”

The man’s body was recovered just before 8 p.m.

“The Department has opened a death investigation for this incident,” the Richmond Police spokesman said. “Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Marshall Young at 804-646-3926.”

The man’s name has not yet been released.
