DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. -- Bandaged, recovering, and too scared to identify herself publicly, a 71-year-old Dinwiddie woman is now penniless and in a desperate situation after a thief stole from her home while she was in the hospital.

“That`s awful, I can`t stand it when I can`t pay my bills,” the woman said.

About three weeks ago, she suffered a medical emergency and had to be taken by EMS to the hospital.

“When they took me to the emergency room they did blood work,” the woman said.

During the course of her rescue, the door to her home in North Dinwiddie was left unlocked.

When she returned four days later, she realized her check book, cash and debit card were missing.

She called the bank and found out someone took all the money out of her account to the tune of $4,000.

“I can`t think of anybody who would do something like that and take somebody else`s money,” the woman said.

“To come in and victimize them in this manner is very troubling,” Major William Knot with the Dinwiddie Sheriff’s Office said.

Knot said the suspect cashed close to 15 checks from the woman’s account all over the Tri-Cities area.

He said a camera captured a photo of the man cashing one of those checks.
