DENVER — One woman was critically injured in a shooting in the 1500 block of Wynkoop in lower downtown DenverTuesday afternoon. Police responded quickly and shut down a number of streets in the area while they dealt with an “active shooting scene.”

A spokesman at Denver Health Medical Center said they did not expect any more victims.

Police said the shooting happened at 2:42 p.m. inside the Alliance Center, 1536 Wynkoop. The scene was secure at around 3:30 p.m. There was no further danger to the public according to police.

Denver Police spokesman Doug Schepman said a male suspect was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He said the woman was shot multiple times and in critical condition.

Schepman said the victim appeared to be targeted and this did not look like a random shooting, but he emphasized this was very early, preliminary information.

People ran out of the building at 1536 Wynkoop when the shooting happened. Several ambulances responded to the scene. Roads around that part of downtown were expected to be blocked for an extended period of time.

The owner of the nearby Squeaky Bean restaurant told FOX31 Denver News that the shooting happened at the Alliance Center. He said a number of non-profit organizations are in that building.
