HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- More than 60 dogs seized from a Hanover home last month due to "unhealthy living conditions" are now ready to be adopted to loving families.

"The canines will be available for adoption on Wednesday, June 29, 2016," Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. James Cooper said. "The doors to the Hanover County Animal Shelter will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m."

The adoption process and requirements are as follows:

  • Driver’s license or other issued form of identification.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Not banned from future adoptions as a result of the court order.
  • Pay an adoption fee of $25
  • Sign and agree to have the animal sterilized, rabies vaccinated, and licensed within 30 days post adoption.
  • Live within the greater Richmond area
  • If you rent, have a signed and dated letter from your landlord/property owner or a copy of your lease stating you’re allowed to own an animal.
  • Only one animal will be adopted per household. No exceptions.

In early May, 68 dogs -- many of them puppies -- were rescued from their breeder's house.

Stephanie M. Saunders, 33, was later found guilty of five counts of cruelty to animals, five counts of inadequate care to animals and one count of selling an unweaned animal. The Hanover County General District Court later awarded custody of the rescued dogs to the county.

Although 68 were seized, 66 will be adoptable.

Animal control said that although two of the dogs were at the home, they were not Saunders' animals, and their owner surrendered them. They have already been adopted out.

The adoption process

The dog’s specific to this seizure case will not be available for view prior to the day of adoption.

Some will need extra care for heart worms, eye infections, and other obstacles from the conditions they endured.

Hanover Animal Control was very specific about the adoption process, due to an avalanche of calls.

Doors will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. It is a first come, first serve process, and all requirements must be met to be considered an adoption candidate.

Proper documentation must be ready, or they will move on to the next person in line. No animal will be held or placed on reserve for any reason.

If you have any further questions please contact animalcontrol@hanovercounty.gov or call at (804) 365-6485 during regular business hours.
