Ashland man killed in Route 33 crash

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. -- A man was killed in a motorcycle crash in Louisa County.

The crash occurred at about 7 p.m. Sunday along the 12000 block of Jefferson Highway (Route 33), near Gardners Road.

"The trooper’s investigation revealed that a 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling west on Route 33 when it attempted to pass a vehicle, there was a car coming in the opposite lane which caused the operator of the motorcycle to apply the brakes the motorcycle then ran off the road to the left striking several fence posts, throwing the operator from the motorcycle," Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said. "The operator of the 1999 Harley Davidson, Steven R. Widener, 47 of Ashland, Virginia died at the scene; he was wearing a helmet."

The Central Virginian reported the crash closed Route 33 between Gardners Road and Buckner Road.
