RICHMOND, Va. — The summer solstice occurs this year at 6:34 p.m. on Monday, June 20th.

The direct rays of the sun were located over the Equator on the first day of Spring (the vernal equinox).

But, for the summer solstice, the direct rays of the sun reach their northernmost point in the Northern Hemisphere, located over the Tropic of Cancer.  This produces a higher sun angle, causing sunburns within 15 minutes in some people.

We see our maximum amount of daylight this year on June 19 and June 20.  On both days, the sun rises at 5:48 a.m. and sets at 8:34 p.m.
