HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Crews are currently investigating the cause of an apartment fire that occurred in the county's East End Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 400 block of Newbridge Terrace off of Nine Mile Road a little before 1 p.m. for the report of an apartment fire. Crews discovered smoke coming from the roof of a two-story apartment complex upon arrival and immediately pulled hose lines to begin a search of the apartment.

The search revealed no one was in the apartment at the time of the fire.

Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire to contain it to the kitchen area, but there was smoke damage throughout. Crews were able to bring the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes.

The fire marshal's office is en route to the scene to investigate the cause and origin of the fire. The Red Cross has been notified to assist the displaced occupants of the apartment.

The fire department is reminding those still without power to turn off any electrical items that may have accidentally been left on when the power went out as a result of Thursday night's storms as they could potential lead to fires in the case that the power is restored when no one is home.
